Any Interest in Themes? (in General)

Newlin [SeeD] June 24 2013 4:40 PM EDT

I've been looking at the CSS files we have and thought I'd muck around with the browser extension Stylish again to see what I could come up with.

Note that the rest of the site doesn't look as nice and will take some fine tuning on my part. Also the headers colors are bound to change - that blue is just what I had on hand.

Below are the two themes I have procured thus far.

Does the community find any appeal in these? Should I change certain colors for a cleaner look/readability?

Any and all criticism is appreciated.

Do you mind giving larger images to judge? I like the darker tone of the first one, but it might be slightly too dark. I can't tell from this size, but are the blue names easily legible?

Unappreciated Misnomer June 24 2013 5:41 PM EDT

i like the darker one, can we keep the names red?

[Unrivaled]Twist Of Fate [SeeD] June 24 2013 5:53 PM EDT

I like the darker one as well, however, for reading purposes the white on gray could be a pain.

Supporter only or free for all?

I've actually been thinking of asking one of the devs to implement, at the very least, the ability to turn on a beta theme. That way, I can work on the beta theme without fear of breaking the site for everyone, and get real-time feedback about changes I make.

I use Stylish to test my themes =]

I can do that once I finish up with all of these conferences and papers that I've been involved in for the past two months. Getting published is hard work :)

Be sure not to forget about us when you've made it big.

Having themes built in to the site would be incredible - no need for any extension and it would work on any web browser.

I'll change it real quick and post it up.

Newlin [SeeD] June 25 2013 11:31 AM EDT

The default red is illegible on the dark background so I did it up with a lighter red.

Sup Lukey.

Demigod June 25 2013 12:30 PM EDT

The red text really does help the legibility. This seems like a lopsided victory for the dark theme over the light one.

Newlin [SeeD] June 28 2013 1:20 PM EDT

How about a dark one with red highlights instead of blue - to keep more with the default styling. The grey surrounding the headers will be changed to match the background as will the edges of the buttons.

That's what I like seeing. Nice stuff!

[Unrivaled]Twist Of Fate [SeeD] June 28 2013 5:01 PM EDT

Agreed. When can we expect implementation? ;)

Xenogard [Chaotic Serenity] June 28 2013 10:49 PM EDT

I like the darker theme. Red isn't my color, but it looks better then the lightish blue color for the names. It looks good though, I'd use it, I'm already using the Dark theme stylish that someone made a while back.

Demigod June 28 2013 11:34 PM EDT

Hmm. It might be the amount of red that's throwing it off. If all the names were white, it might be perfect.

Fishead June 29 2013 2:03 AM EDT

uh... duh...
clicked on the image (unintentionally) then couldn't figure out why nothing happened when I tried to fight.

Change is good, even if it is just cosmetic. I like what I'm seeing.

Here is a quick taste. You can use the Stylish extension on either Chrome or Firefox and install it using that.

This is just a dark theme, no red or blue highlights in this one and is still in need of some work. Enjoy.

Are you running your browser in metro or desktop mode? I have it running on my Windows 8 machine in desktop Chrome just fine.

It would seem it only works in chrome at the moment and not firefox, I will look into it.

Newlin [SeeD] July 1 2013 9:19 PM EDT

Firefox likes !important declared after every setting I want to override the default css sheet. As such it has been added and now works (with the exception of the background of input boxes) in Firefox as well.

Updated!

Most everything is themed at this point (I didn't test in Firefox yet). If anyone has input on colors or code to clean it all up that would be appreciated.

If you want to request a colored theme go ahead and post it here and I'll see what I can do. It makes my job even easier if you provide the color palette ;)

And a special thanks to Pixel Sage for helping me out a bit.

Newlin [SeeD] July 2 2013 4:24 PM EDT

And I'm going to try to replace the red bullet and logo in the sidebar if I can.

QBPixel Sage July 2 2013 4:58 PM EDT

Luckily, I just added an ID tag in the code for the logo area. I'm going to try to get someone to commit that change so it goes live. It'll be #logo.

The new look and options could make the site much more appealing to new players.

The new look and options could make the site much more appealing to new players.

Hopefully it can aid in that.

I noticed the rounding of user images now works in the forums which fits nicely. I wonder how easy it would be to manipulate the header background images to have them rounded on the ends instead of a straight edge.

Also, I'm not sure if Stylish updates themes automatically but an update is out.
