Gettin' slow... (in General)

Demigod January 1 2011 5:09 PM EST

Is it just me or anyone else?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] January 1 2011 5:13 PM EST

Nope, me and Nat thought the same thing. We pointed it out to Lamu already.

Fuhgawz January 1 2011 5:15 PM EST

It seems to be slow sporadically here a lot lately.

horseguy001 [Blender 2021] January 1 2011 5:18 PM EST

It was for me earlier, but I thought it was everyone getting in on whacky exp time.

Guardian January 1 2011 5:34 PM EST

can't even burn 10 ba properly.
it's really slow.

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 1 2011 5:45 PM EST

Slow for me too.

horseguy001 [Blender 2021] January 1 2011 6:02 PM EST

I just burned through my BA now and it was super fast, not even one hiccup.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] January 1 2011 6:03 PM EST

Lol me too, Lamu said he didn't change anything, I don't know if NS/Jon ninja changed something, but it's definitely better.

AdminLamuness January 1 2011 6:04 PM EST

I'm no longer experiencing the problem as well. But it could be as horseguy mentioned. It might have to do with wacky xp/money time. Will look further into it.

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] January 1 2011 6:05 PM EST

Yeah it does seem to have something to do with exp time.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 2 2011 5:41 PM EST

slow again with connection timeouts for me.

Demigod January 2 2011 6:13 PM EST

Sporadically getting it again as well.

AdminNightStrike January 3 2011 11:52 AM EST

A sporadic thing is just the nature of the web. A constant thing is different.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 3 2011 1:24 PM EST

it is happening once again for me now.

QBOddBird January 3 2011 1:24 PM EST

Same, I was just about to post. Sporadic or not, it is definitely annoying. :(

Kingkiller January 3 2011 1:49 PM EST

Extremely frustrating

Unappreciated Misnomer January 3 2011 1:56 PM EST

Load average for past 1/5/15 minutes is 0.00/0.04/0.06

QBJohnnywas January 3 2011 2:37 PM EST

Been very slow for me for the last few hours. Fights aren't loading, just timing out. Everything else at my end is fine, including a couple of sites that are graphic heavy that are slower than the rest. Nothing else times out.

AdminShade January 3 2011 2:43 PM EST

slow here as well, timing out and can't really fight well...

QBJohnnywas January 3 2011 2:43 PM EST

Where it's slow for me:

comatose opponents: the page that tells you they are that way takes ages to load.

Loading up the reply box page for threads.

QBOddBird January 3 2011 2:53 PM EST

oh god yes, the reply box for threads. I tried to post like 3 times earlier in a new player thread before I finally got past the connection timeouts.

Demigod January 3 2011 2:54 PM EST

I haven't had a problem with replies yet. That may be a red herring.

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] January 3 2011 3:11 PM EST

Getting lots of timeouts....

AdminQBVerifex January 3 2011 3:29 PM EST

Connection limit being hit, timeouts abound. We're looking into this problem.

Windwalker January 3 2011 3:31 PM EST

I get on and can't fight more and more frequently? :( what is going on?
Not like we have a massive user base?
Makes me want to chalk this one.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 3 2011 3:54 PM EST

the issue is either hardware or software. if it is hardware we have to help figure it out by ruling out other possibilities.

if it is software it can be something else running on the server or it could be changes made. once again we can help by posting when the issues start and when they end to help see if there is a pattern.

people are working to solve it so please be patient.

horseguy001 [Blender 2021] January 3 2011 4:23 PM EST

Just sped up for me at 4:19 after being painfully slow for the better part of 25 min.

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 3 2011 5:17 PM EST

It's still very slow on my end.

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 3 2011 5:23 PM EST

...and immediately after I posted that, my speed improved considerably.

horseguy001 [Blender 2021] January 3 2011 9:40 PM EST

9:38 pm things have slowed to a crawl again for me.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 3 2011 9:42 PM EST

aye, it has been going on for 15 minutes or so this time.

horseguy001 [Blender 2021] January 3 2011 9:48 PM EST

9:48 speedy again. Hmmmmm and the plot thickens :)

Kingkiller January 4 2011 7:59 AM EST

Running very smooth for me this morning. Thanks to all who had a hand in improving the speed!

AdminNightStrike January 4 2011 10:09 AM EST

Make sure that if you're going to report current issues, that you do so with the new sidebar javascript code. If you haven't reloaded in a while, then you have the old code.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 4 2011 10:29 AM EST

<script src="/img/sidebar.7.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

if i understand correctly, this means i am still on the old version. how the heck do you get it to update it then, i have done everything i can possibly think of in firefox to get it to update and it is still on seven?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 4 2011 10:40 AM EST

maybe that isn't the right place to look for the 8 version? i went to private browsing and it was still on seven so i went to google chrome on a computer that i have never used chrome to play cb and it loaded up seven as well.

where do we see that version 8 js for the sidebar then?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 4 2011 2:02 PM EST

just to make sure i am looking in the right place for that version:

using firefox i right clicked in the sidebar>this frame>view frame source. the text above comes from about the twelfth line that has text on it.

AdminLamuness January 4 2011 2:06 PM EST

Hi dude. Actually, sidebar.7.js is the correct file. It's just that sometimes the same file gets updated, but the browser still has the "old" version still in its cache. That's why we sometimes say to either reload the sidebar, or clear everything from the browser and restart.

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] January 4 2011 2:06 PM EST

Should be right dude, and I got this too:

<script src="/img/sidebar.7.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

I hate spellchecker, I'm not going to put in a bunch of HTML because of it. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 4 2011 2:15 PM EST

oh, i was going by the last post in this thread:

http://www.carnageblender.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=00394n

ns states it should be 8 there so that is what threw me off.

AdminNightStrike January 4 2011 3:29 PM EST

Well, we have an 8. At some point we switched back to 7. I don't know when or why. 8 was last updated in June. Fex, any idea? Or Lamu?

I'm inclined to delete all versions and go to just sidebar.js.

Demigod January 4 2011 7:20 PM EST

Argh, the slow pirates be attackin'.

AdminQBVerifex January 4 2011 7:40 PM EST

I think the only reason we have numbers on them is because it helped with caching issues. I think the best way to mitigate this might be to include a hash of the current file on the source of it.

So, instead of
src="/img/sidebar.7.js"

It would be
src="/img/sidebar.js?4FREH4DZ"

and that hash would only change when a new version of the JS is released, because it's always a hash of the latest version of the JS. That should solve all of our caching problems with JS.

AdminNightStrike January 4 2011 9:33 PM EST

That doesn't do much with IE, I already tried.

Kefeck [Demonic Serenity] January 5 2011 12:42 AM EST

I'm going to sign out before I get frustrated..

Very slow again..

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 5 2011 2:47 PM EST

i am starting to see some slowing down now.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] January 5 2011 3:33 PM EST

Zippiest it's been all day!

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 5 2011 3:44 PM EST

for some reason that made me sing: Zippity doo dah, Zippity aye, My oh my what a wonderful day

QBOddBird January 5 2011 5:54 PM EST

getting site timeouts :(

Phoenix [The Forgehood] January 5 2011 7:26 PM EST

I keep fearing that I'll miss a botcheck to this...

QBOddBird January 5 2011 9:42 PM EST

I keep fearing that I'll miss a botcheck to this...

I, for one, already have

Hopefully the slow server gets fixed soonnnn

AdminNightStrike January 6 2011 1:11 AM EST

I did a whole lot of stuff tonight (hence the complete outage for a few minutes.)

Give me exact times when you can *consistently* get timeouts, or fights taking longer than 3 seconds to return.

AdminShade January 6 2011 12:29 PM EST

Time is Thu Jan 6 12:28:29 EST 2011

Fighting sometimes takes more than 10 seconds to return, community just timed out 2 times for me and home page took 30 seconds to return, after timing out and displaying a blue default skin.

horseguy001 [Blender 2021] January 6 2011 12:57 PM EST

Time is Thu Jan 6 12:54:14 EST 2011

Took me 2 min just to be able to post this XD Fighting is also incredibly slow.

lorsledrae January 6 2011 1:25 PM EST

I got 4 timeouts in the past 5 minutes. Few fights are going fast, most take 5-10 seconds, and about every 4th or 5th fight it times out.

Sickone January 6 2011 2:17 PM EST

It's been slow the entire year so far, in fact since before (just much worse this past week) and it's still slow like hell, thought it was the network at my vacation location, but that's not it.
It's the server almost constantly nearly croaking, and it's NOT the "average load" this time either.
Whatever small desire to keep burning BA I might still have had is quickly fading when I have to wait up to a full minute for the server to unchoke, or wait from one to five seconds between fights when it's somewhat operational.

Sickone January 6 2011 2:18 PM EST

And other times, it all of a sudden decides it wants to work just fine for a couple of minutes BUT NOT LONGER.
Graaaaah !

AdminNightStrike January 6 2011 5:14 PM EST

Whatever small desire to keep burning BA I might still have had is quickly fading when I have to wait up to a full minute for the server to unchoke, or wait from one to five seconds between fights when it's somewhat operational.

...As if I'm ignoring the problem........

I spent 5 hours with pgsql techs last night alone.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 6 2011 5:17 PM EST

it is happening at this moment.

AdminNightStrike January 6 2011 5:46 PM EST

These times all seemed to correspond with the dhcp client doing a way-too-often renew on the secondary eth1 interface. I shut that interface off.

So... Resume finding more times at which the server barfs.

AdminNightStrike January 6 2011 6:11 PM EST

I cut the time to load the clan stats on the home page in half....

horseguy001 [Blender 2021] January 6 2011 6:14 PM EST

These times all seemed to correspond with the dhcp client doing a way-too-often renew on the secondary eth1 interface.

Gah! I should have known!

...when in reality I understand nothing about that sentence. But if you figured it out then you have my thanks all the same :)

Demigod January 6 2011 6:32 PM EST

>dhcp client doing a way-too-often renew on the secondary eth1 interface.

Don't feel bad, horseguy. I read it as dhcp=router and eth1=ethernet connection. So the internet cable got unplugged. NS's been working on it for many hours, and I just figured it out in a couple of seconds. :)

And thanks for giving us a heads-up, NS. Even if it makes almost no sense to me, it's still nice to hear some details of what's going on.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 6 2011 9:03 PM EST

timeouts again here when i tried to post a forum message.

AdminNightStrike January 6 2011 9:10 PM EST

Lies!

(EDIT: Posting this message timed out..... :(

QBOddBird January 6 2011 9:11 PM EST

Slowness now, at 9:10 server time

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] January 6 2011 9:45 PM EST

; )

Zakalwe [Heroic Method] January 6 2011 10:25 PM EST

Slowness now.

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] January 6 2011 10:59 PM EST

For now you can fight from your favorites list without using the sidebar to run through ba much faster.

Demigod January 6 2011 11:16 PM EST

What method are you referring to?

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 6 2011 11:18 PM EST

http://www.carnageblender.com/opponents-favorites.tcl

Open that page and click fight, then back, then fight (or open in a new tab or window!)

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] January 7 2011 12:37 AM EST

I'm having trouble forging, which requires no sidebar...

AdminShade January 7 2011 4:54 AM EST

For me, all slowness seems to be gone now.

AdminShade January 7 2011 12:13 PM EST

Time is Fri Jan 7 12:12:42 EST 2011

Some fights take ~10 seconds, others are instant.

QBJohnnywas January 7 2011 1:45 PM EST

I'm getting fight slowdown now.

DrAcO5676 [The Knighthood III] January 7 2011 2:01 PM EST

About to quit playing... getting way to annoying to even try burning my points at all...

DrAcO5676 [The Knighthood III] January 7 2011 2:04 PM EST

About to quit playing... getting way to annoying to even try burning my points at all...

I know it is nobodies fault... but I am just getting quite tired of all of it.

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] January 7 2011 2:08 PM EST

Method to fight when slowdown occurs:

1) click edit

2) click a fight link on that page on a target in your favorites list.

3) click back

You will find it is many times faster than trying to fight with the sidebar. Until this bug gets fixed which is on highest priority you should find this an alright way to fight.

DrAcO5676 [The Knighthood III] January 7 2011 2:10 PM EST

Have been Nat ^_^ Thanks though...

AdminShade January 7 2011 2:50 PM EST

Time is Fri Jan 7 14:49:34 EST 2011

slow again for me, occasionally timing out

QBJohnnywas January 7 2011 4:44 PM EST

Wasn't slow at all, fighting was nice and speedy. Now it's hit slowdown again.

Unappreciated Misnomer January 7 2011 5:06 PM EST

horrible, this is the worst its been so far but im glad Nat found a small way to make it better.

Newlin [SeeD] January 7 2011 5:12 PM EST

Ya it's pretty bad, trying to fight normally it times out every time.

I do appreciate the time Nightstrike (and others?) are putting in to try and get this resolved though :)

Unappreciated Misnomer January 7 2011 5:12 PM EST

to somewhat speed things up even more, i found to right-click the fight button and open in a new tab was faster, almost faster than hitting enter....hmm

Demigod January 7 2011 5:26 PM EST

And that trick works wonders. It even shows "Security" in the tabs' text if you hit bot checks, and "Allowance Exceeded" when you hit zero BA.

Sickone January 7 2011 5:41 PM EST

Started getting worse about 10-15 minutes ago, slowly ramping the dampening, then it hit a nothing-loading phase a couple of minutes ago, borderline workable now.

MonkeyMandate [Wasting Time] January 7 2011 5:56 PM EST

very slow for me atm

BHT January 7 2011 7:35 PM EST

Terribly slow, can barely fight. Not even going to waste my time.

BadFish January 7 2011 10:08 PM EST

It's been too slow to burn any BA for days now... apparently not so for anyone else, i'm still getting hit 500 times a day

Kingkiller January 7 2011 10:13 PM EST

I burned all my BA, but not to say that it wasn't painful to do so :(

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 7 2011 10:20 PM EST

I'm burning BA by opening tabs for each of my opponents and refreshing them one after the other

Zenai [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 7 2011 10:20 PM EST

It has been sporadic for me. At times its so fast I don't even have time to blink other times its so slow I can watch a commercial before I finish a fight or just time out altogether. whatever the problem is I hereby state that I hate it >.<

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] January 7 2011 10:38 PM EST

5 hours of slow time is rather a lot.

AdminNightStrike January 8 2011 7:59 AM EST

Z, what you are experiencing is the effect of fixing things that aren't the root problem. I've gone and fixed a number of things that make fights in general faster... but that aren't the cause of this "big slowdown" issue. So what that means is that when you aren't triggering the "big slowdown" issue, fights themselves are faster than before.

If nobody can trigger a slowdown while not using the sidebar, then I'm going to say it's probably due to all the stuff going on there.

AdminNightStrike January 8 2011 8:19 AM EST

Fex, is there a maximum to the number of simultaneous ajax calls being made at once? Like, some browsers only allow you to be requesting two pages at once. Right now, we have several requests going on at the same time.

AdminShade January 8 2011 5:56 PM EST

Time is Sat Jan 8 17:55:04 EST 2011

Slow, slower and time outs.

AdminShade January 8 2011 6:00 PM EST

Even slow on 1 fight when using the work around, especially when it generates a bot check.

AdminNightStrike January 8 2011 6:00 PM EST

At that exact time in the syslog, nothing was running for a while, and then at 55:01, cron ran munin... I'll look at what that is.

QBOddBird January 8 2011 6:01 PM EST

I am having difficulty staying connected to the site, forget burning BA

QBJohnnywas January 9 2011 5:31 AM EST

I've just managed to burn a complete set of ba normally at normal speed for the first time in a week.

Thought I'd report it, just in case you can make a comparison between the site running normally and the site being slow.

AdminNightStrike January 9 2011 10:05 AM EST
