Can anyone find for me where Jon states... (in General)

QBRanger May 19 2009 8:38 AM EDT

He wants characters to have 2 different types of attack.

I keep hearing from people that this is the way Jon wants characters to be.

A mixed bag with a magic and physical attack.

I personally have never seen this in the forums and never saw with my own eyes him say this in chat.

I personally find this foolish and think a specialization rather than generalization is better for characters.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] May 19 2009 8:42 AM EDT

The big problem with that, is that defense can also be specialized.

And having a mixed team will mean more types of damage going to the defensive team nullifying its defense against one type of damage set.

QBRanger May 19 2009 8:49 AM EDT

Yes, there will be super specialized defensive characters.

However, is it better to have 2 average attacks of different types or 1 good to great attack of 1 type?

I prefer the latter. And believe overall it is more effective.

However this does not answer my initial question:

Where has Jon ever stated that he wants people to have 2 different types of attack? I see people typing this quite frequently. Mostly in chat.

It was a belief that was rife when evasion was at it's peak, and people were starting to use EC. The (fairly obvious) idea being that if you have both types of attack it makes it difficult to defend against.

But I believe it was a player led idea based on observing the changes Jon was making, rather than Jon saying it directly. I remember a changelog where it was discussed. I'll see if I can find it.

Personally I'm a big fan of focusing your attack and then boosting that as much as you can. I've always found that to be the most effective way of doing things.

I believe JW's assessment is accurate.

I feel people started thinking that with the introduction of Leadership, which lends itself to benefit multiple damage dealers. A prime example is Nov of course.

CB is not designed to force people to use a particular setup.

Rumors tend to crop along when people try to dissect the why behind the what post-changemonth.

I think he did say something which could be interpreted this way.

QBRanger May 21 2009 3:47 PM EDT

I have heard that rumor before. Just can anyone substantiate it?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] May 21 2009 5:04 PM EDT

in October of 2008, jon says this:

вам нужно много типов повреждения выиграть

babel fish translates that from Russian to English as:

you should many types of damage win

; )

QBRanger May 21 2009 5:06 PM EDT

I'll go with what NS posted in this thread rather than hearsay.

Rubberduck[T] [Hell Blenders] May 21 2009 5:08 PM EDT

Even if he did say something to that effect I doubt he meant it 100%, it was probably a snarky reply to someone like you Ranger ;)

Jon's been screaming it for years, nearly every change has brought us closer to a time when a single source of overwhelming damage isn't capable of winning every fight at equal power.
It's inherent in the nature of the game at this point.

QBRanger May 21 2009 8:19 PM EDT

Actually I disagree.

We are getting more and more to the point of the tattoo being the focus of a character.

The others are mainly support.

We currently have it with the RBF. Except for a couple characters, most with the RBF use it as the only attack, given its special nature of attack.

Get rid of the exbow and regular tanks can play as such and not find other secondary methods of trying to do damage.
