My internetz can beat up your internetz ! (in Off-topic)

Sickone April 16 2009 5:18 PM EDT

Taken from somebody else's thread about internet problems, the link...

http://www.speedtest.net/

Take a test with any of the "recommended servers" but at least 500 miles away from your location, preferably more.
Then post how much your internet connection COSTS and if you have any caps at all on it :)

Brakke Bres [Ow man] April 16 2009 5:22 PM EDT

I have a 10mbit/1mbit down/up ADSL from my provider.
But I have a crappy router and crappy phone line between them so I rarely hit anything above 7mbit/0.75mbit down/up, costs: οΎ€25 a month, which is a scam.

iBananco [Blue Army] April 16 2009 5:22 PM EDT

$0 / month, no caps.

Sickone April 16 2009 5:25 PM EDT

I'll start...

and

No upload/download caps, no throttling, fixed "in their network" phone included... and it costs 7 Euro/month (after all taxes).
Needless to say, I am quite happy with it.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] April 16 2009 5:26 PM EDT

University internet with optic fiber? that kinda screws up the results here.

Sickone April 16 2009 5:27 PM EDT

Free university 'tube' doesn't really qualify :)

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] April 16 2009 5:29 PM EDT

Holy hell, JS, That really is OVER 9000!!!1!!1

Brakke Bres [Ow man] April 16 2009 5:29 PM EDT

at least my results are stable with no significant drop of mb/s even over a very long distance.

ScY April 16 2009 5:48 PM EDT

JS u pay $40,000 a year for that. Most expensive Ive seen here :D

Lord Bob April 16 2009 5:57 PM EDT

But I'm currently at work. I expect my home computer to be a bit faster.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] April 16 2009 6:04 PM EDT

My university tuition costs more than his college tuition... >.>

And our internet sucks mad slow. And we have a 4gb download / 2gb upload per week cap.

[P]Mitt April 16 2009 6:10 PM EDT

I'm in the same boat as JS. Costs $0, but with a big tuition fee... No caps on usage though

I'll retest later in the night when there are less people using the bandwidth.

Thak April 16 2009 6:25 PM EDT

Was on my laptop through wifi. PC is hard wired will prob get better results

Zenai [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 16 2009 6:47 PM EDT

Im not as good as most of you guys but hey I say not bad for a comp thrown together back in '03 :)

{Wookie}-Jir.Vr- April 16 2009 6:49 PM EDT

I'm at home now, but we just got a new line at work, and the speedtest results on average ~25meg/sec.

Demigod April 16 2009 7:02 PM EDT

Glad to see the link is entertaining people. I'd post my results, but bittorrent is slowing my down to a crawl.

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 16 2009 7:48 PM EDT

bartjan April 17 2009 12:01 AM EDT

I do not know how valid these results are, as the download speed seems to be somewhat constant, no matter how far away I am...
Oh, and how much am I paying for this? Nothing :) as it gets sponsored by my employer.

Shark April 17 2009 12:56 AM EDT

AdminShade April 17 2009 3:17 AM EDT

Bit varying results here, only minimal though

AdminQBVerifex April 17 2009 3:22 AM EDT

Hakai [Aye Phelta Thi] April 17 2009 3:30 AM EDT

Right around the corner:

More than 500 miles

Why such a huge difference?

AdminShade April 17 2009 3:39 AM EDT

Right around the corner might be a bottle neck with a very slow server (or intermediate connection) as opposed to further away.

Daz April 17 2009 4:09 AM EDT

35GB Day + 60GB Night caps.
$179.90 per month. This DOES include our home phone, though. I think it would be $140 or so without that.

Prices are in AUD. It's something like $130 in USD.

Wizard'sFirstRule April 17 2009 7:11 AM EDT

about 4Mps dl, and 0.1Mps ul. Costs about $50NZL per month

stupid telecom

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 17 2009 10:34 AM EDT

Damn thing doesn't have a server close enough to show off my latency... I see pings of around 16ms when playing counter-strike on about fifty different servers. I pay around $20 and have a static ip (that I'm too lazy to take advantage of). Seeing all those 20mb connections has me drooling... maybe I'll up this to 6 for a couple months to see if it's worth it.

Fatil1ty April 17 2009 11:15 AM EDT

60 a month and 100gb limit

Kefeck [Demonic Serenity] April 17 2009 11:44 AM EDT

.

redrummm April 18 2009 5:54 AM EDT

This, for 5400 Yen per month, or around $50 USD. No caps either. The Japanese don't mess around w/ their Internet. :-D

I am not looking forward to the day when I return to San Francisco and my choice between Verizon & Comcast. *sigh*

DrAcO5676 [The Knighthood III] April 18 2009 6:28 AM EDT

And this is While I run two instances of diablo and other random programs on open ports

Marlfox [Cult of the Valaraukar] April 18 2009 7:11 AM EDT

I so want to move to Norway... ;)

Sickone April 19 2009 1:34 PM EDT

Brakke Bres [Ow man] April 19 2009 2:08 PM EDT

/me wonders which country downloads the most torrents and uses usenext the most?

Sickone April 19 2009 2:18 PM EDT

My guess ? Sweeden first, with Romania a close second :)

bartjan April 19 2009 3:09 PM EDT

In August I will camp at a camp site that has a 10Gb/s Internet connection :)

Flamey April 19 2009 9:13 PM EDT

The scary thing is that you'll be camping. Not going to a convention or anything..

I pay $50 AUD for my 4 Mb/S, I have an 18GB limit. Darn internet being cheap in everywhere but Australia.

bartjan April 19 2009 10:11 PM EDT

It's HAR2009, a convention on a camp site...
