forums at home are good (in General)

haveing the forums on home page really helps, at first i thought it was dumb but now its really nice.

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] December 22 2007 5:46 PM EST

I could get used to it.

But the equip page should be default ;)

Too bad the list now is way too short. Often when I return from work, the oldest thread on the 'recent threads' list is made after I left for work.

And no, playing the game at work is currently not an option for me. Security at banks and CB don't mix. It's only a few months ago since they allowed access to the Internet...

ssh tunnel to home bart?

bartjan December 22 2007 6:05 PM EST

ssh is already firewalled out... Only option I can think of is a ssh tunnel over port 80...

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] December 22 2007 6:07 PM EST

that's what I was expecting you to have to do...

You could also do the DNS tunnel trick

bartjan December 22 2007 6:14 PM EST

Both would only work if the firewall is not a L7 one (dunno if it is). Easier option is to use this brand new laptop I'm using right now (Thinkpad T61, 4GB ram ;), as it also has a WWAN card. I still need to configure it under Linux, but that would allow me access to the full Internet, including CB, wherever I am...

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] December 22 2007 6:24 PM EST

Sounds like sweet laptop, I'm jealous!

Last Gasp December 22 2007 8:27 PM EST

I use the same option from work... take in my own laptop then hook up with the local Free WiFi to check out CB in the office. No issues with corporate security when I do that. :-)

Tunnelling over DNS, while it works, will get you fired with any decent IT guys on the horn. The best is to do ssh over an open port (I've used telnet:23 in the past.) Even that will get blocked by the better firewalls, which usually requires encapsulating the ssh connection in http packets with some http wrapper.

I currently always use ssh tunnels to get to CB, although from a certain location, I can't find any way to make the ssh connection work. They're getting too smart :) The http wrapper is my next step once I get around to it.

As a backup plan, calls from my cell phone to any other verizon phone are unlimited and free. CB should work fine over a modem, right? :) :) Cell phone on laptop, cell phone on home computer, instant access to anything.

I kinda like the new Home page. If I could change one thing though, I'd merge the Manage Characters and Home page. At least that way Home would feel a bit more personal, and it would allow people to have an easy overview of characters, money, and ammo right on their Home page.

> I'd merge the Manage Characters and Home page

I started doing that but it just got too big.

I'm starting to think Stats doesn't belong though. That would free up some space.

QBOddBird December 23 2007 11:42 PM EST

Wooo, stats on the sidebar! That means I can check someone out, then click straight to a link on the sidebar while I'm looking at them again! I'm all for it, Jon!

Xenko December 24 2007 1:07 AM EST

I could do without the stats on the homepage. To be honest they are kind of boring. Koy is first place (shocker), top 5 clans don't change that much. I'd rather have the equip page on the home page, with recent threads underneath or something (not sure if there is enough room though to make it look nice).

Father Christmas You found a CB Santa: Create a thread in the General forums letting us all know which thread you found him in and Santa's little helper AdminG_Beee will send you something nice.

Update: Sorry, you didn't find him first.

This thread is closed to new posts. However, you are welcome to reference it from a new thread; link this with the html forums at home are good
