Idea for shields and melee specialists (in General)

I just had a great idea for users that would like to use tank strategies without ranged weapons.
What if a shield's AC would get x2 bonus during ranged combat for minions using only a one-handed melee weapon?
It would make sense because the minion can place the shield directly in front it while approaching it's opponent during ranged combat. Thus reducing damage from ammo and spells significantly.
It makes sense IMOP.

it makes sense until we see mage sheild +50 x 2 = 100% magical damage reduction
and stuff like Mithril Shield [20] (+54) x2 = 148 AC + wall armor = invulnerable to range attacks?
i think its a good idea for some sort of boost though... maybe double the base bonus or something....
example 20 = 40 hence Mithril Shield [40] (+54) during range

how does +50 = 100% magical reduction?

deifeln, AC bonus, not Mage Shield magic reduction bonus ;)

Exactly... the bonus would apply to AC only. So a Mage Shield would still only be useful against magical attacks.

And lostling, you comment about only boosting base AC makes a lot of sense. It would still be a significant difference and it would stay within the realm of the reasonable.
The effect would have to apply to walls, so I don't really like the idea. What's more is that walls would get even stronger, so melee only users would have an even harder time against them.

The bonus was supposed to be only applied during ranged, how does this affect melee users?

This is a good idea :O
Not doubled though, that's ridiculous!
Something like a 10% bonus, rounded down, to the enchanted AC during the first few rounds of ranged seems to add a nice bit of realism. :)

so this is helping the odd 10 or less people in the game that use either a BoTH or a VB?

It gives a new strategy option. That's what this is all about.

I don't think just the 1 handed weapon users should get some help. From reading all the other threads about archers, all tanks need help both 1handed and 2handed correct? So if you help one you need to help the other somehow.

^archers was supposed to be inclusive of all ranged

The problem is that is you are using a 2-handed weapon, you can't used your shield as effectively to protect yourself because you need 2 hands to hold your weapon.

One could argue, the way I see it, as most tanks running with their 2 handed weapon with one hand and only swing when close to their target with 2. So duing ranged rounds they could use their shield to block ranged attacks to aid in getting close to engage. The penalty for shields with 2 handed tanks should be during the melee part of the battle only, where 1 handed aren't penalized since they can wield both sword and shield during a melee battle.

Well, you would then need to apply the one round penalty while the tank adjusts its shield and 2-handed weapon for combat instead of defense.
Or maybe the shield's ranged round AC bonus could simply be lower for tanks using 2-handed weapons... Yeah, that makes more sense.
