Auctioning DAWG's items (in General)

AdminJonathan January 15 2007 9:29 PM EST

I've put 1/3 of DAWG's items into auctions with a starting bid of 10k, no BIN, for 3 days. Then I'll do another 1/3, and so on.

Proceeds will be sold to pay for a new server. I'm tired (and I'm sure you are too) of network-related outages, so I'm going to move CB to a better colocation facility. Instead of shipping the old server, I'm going to install a new one at the new facility, install CB, and then take the old one down. This means CB won't be down while the old machine gets fedexed around, and we'll get a new server with more disks. (When the network isn't down, disk seeking is the current bottleneck. Those of you who have administered databases will understand this. The rest of you can watch this, if you're curious.)

Now I'm going to go see which 20 items got auctioned. ("order by random()" :)

AdminJonathan January 15 2007 9:43 PM EST

silly random(), putting most of the high-end items in the first batch...

I cancelled the MH auction; I'll reinstate it after this round, when there's more liquidity. :)

TrueDevil [AAA] January 15 2007 9:46 PM EST

uh yea, I was about to say 'overkill'. :)

QBRanger January 15 2007 10:02 PM EST

Jon,

Since you do not sell CB2, how will the "proceeds" pay for a new server.

RaptorX January 15 2007 10:05 PM EST

Seems if you want money use FS/WTB. That would allow USD's bid.

krasko January 15 2007 10:05 PM EST

What is going to happen to his tat?

JaKobi1Kenobi [Shrimp gang] January 15 2007 10:07 PM EST

i think he is only using the money from DAWG's auctions to sell for cash

Flamey January 15 2007 10:11 PM EST

yeah, but he said he doesn't sell $CB2 for $USD.

AdminJonathan January 15 2007 10:12 PM EST

I thought it was clear that in this case I will be selling the CBD for USD.

krasko January 15 2007 10:15 PM EST

Can you tell us if you are going to sell after each round or when all the items are sold?
P.S.I wish there was a paypal in Bulgaria.

QBRanger January 15 2007 10:16 PM EST

Jon,

It was semi-clear since in your FORS, you state you will not sell CB for USD.

However, that is why I asked my question.

noneedforthese January 15 2007 10:30 PM EST

Hmm PM has a point, but perhaps this situation is slightly different, as this will probably be a thrice-off and Jon isn't simply 'conjuring' up CB2 cash up for sale, but rather selling existing items as if DAWG himself was selling them/the cash he gets for them.

Maelstrom January 15 2007 10:33 PM EST

I think it's a great idea. Sell off items that were used by a cheater, in order to improve the game for everyone else.

AdminJonathan January 15 2007 10:44 PM EST

If it will make everyone happier I'll be glad to just ebay the items directly for USD like I did on occasion in cb1; I thought this way would give the morally-against-USD crowd a chance to bid, as well.

It's okay; by now I'm used to someone's knickers getting bunched no matter what I do...

JaKobi1Kenobi [Shrimp gang] January 15 2007 10:54 PM EST

i would also make sure the chairman cant bid on the stuff high NW items =no good for bidders besides whats the point then

QBRanger January 15 2007 10:56 PM EST

Jon,

I think you took what I was typing wrong.

I was trying to clarify that you were going to sell cb2 for usd since I have not seen you do that in the past of cb2. I was not around for most of cb1.

QBsutekh137 January 15 2007 11:21 PM EST

I'd love an eBay auction, at least for the lots of cash at the end! I might even bend my own USD rule for that, and I spent quite a bit on the last new server auction over on CB1... *smile*

At some point it will come down to USD cash, so eBay seems as good a way as any for that final selling of CB cash.

TheHatchetman January 15 2007 11:46 PM EST

ummm... sutekh + tons of cash = new dominator of CB?

noneedforthese January 15 2007 11:57 PM EST

"I think it's a great idea. Sell off items that were used by a cheater, in order to improve the game for everyone else."

I couldn't agree more, that way they give back what they took from non-cheaters :)

House January 16 2007 12:03 AM EST

Why give eBay a cut of the funding???? The more Jon brings in the better for all of us, right? With paypal taking small chunks and then eBay taking small chunks, why nickle and dime the big payoff to a little payoff???

Zoom January 16 2007 12:26 AM EST

Plus an Ebay auction would make it so the players who don't have a lot of USD have a chance at getting anything

TheHatchetman January 16 2007 12:34 AM EST

they're talking about auctioning off the $CB... if u dont have much USD, you're not getting much CBD

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 16 2007 1:06 AM EST

Sut has always dominated CB, just didn't bother to actually let us know...

Halcyon January 16 2007 1:20 AM EST

As much as I'd love to go either way on this, I can't. I'd love to buy the items, however don't have $, as I have my wife to take care of. And I can't buy them in CB2$ either ... so ..... eitherway.

However, it CB likely to outbid every item that goes up ... USD is the best bet, and atleast Jon will get something back for a change. I think the whole USD thing outside of giving some to Jon, one way or another, is total bull**** anyways.

Halcyon January 16 2007 1:21 AM EST

Incase thats unclear: Jon should get a cut, and this is his chance .. deal with it. Or go start your own buisness that costs you more than you make from it.

Sir Leon [Soup Ream] January 16 2007 1:57 AM EST

Way to announce this after i gave Drac a inexpensive loan. x-|

This is a great idea though, and i think those complaining should just be quiet.

Josh [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 16 2007 4:47 AM EST

"ummm... sutekh + tons of cash = new dominator of CB? "

I'd have to agree with Novice. Sut has always dominated CB.

Maelstrom January 16 2007 4:49 AM EST

This auction was designed to give sutekh an unfair advantage!

QBsutekh137 January 16 2007 10:27 AM EST

Heh, the most I would spend would be enough for one more minion (that would be plenty, $300+), and I am not sure that would even get me there...

Last time this sort of thing happened (on CB1), I had pretty much stopped with the USD usage. Then, Jonathan needed a new server and sold lots of cash on eBay. Well, the "charity" nature of it (I mean the quotes, I don't consider this charity, I consider it money well-deserved and VERY well-spent) made several folks really run up the bids. I think I ended up paying $15 per million for one lot, and then getting out-bid on the others. *smile*

Jonathan got the new server and that was the last USD I spent as far as I can recall. There began the making back of cash via forging, until Jonathan announced the birth of CB2 in December of 2004.

A little CB history to start your day! *smile*

miteke [Superheros] January 16 2007 12:54 PM EST

Valiek: Incase thats unclear: Jon should get a cut, and this is his chance .. deal with it. Or go start your own business that costs you more than you make from it.

You guys, no one is complaining. PopMan was just clarifying whether Jon changed his mind about selling CB2 for USD. There was a very real contradiction between long standing policy and stated intent in this case. Jon clarified; in addition, general consensus is that although his selling for USD violates the policy in letter, it does not do so in spirit.

AdminJonathan January 16 2007 1:38 PM EST

"go start your own business that costs you more than you make from it"

For the record, I don't lose money on CB. (Opportunity cost might be another matter, but that's hard to quantify. :)

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 16 2007 1:39 PM EST

You've always not ever been payed in full for your time either Jon, so it's a labor of love if I'm right...

Thraklight Resonance January 16 2007 6:21 PM EST

Opportunity costs. The time that Jonathan puts into coding new changes for CB2 prevents him from helping Pitr create another doomsday device. :-)

AdminJonathan January 18 2007 10:07 PM EST

I've posted notice of the first round of CBD sales in FS/WTB.

AdminJonathan January 18 2007 10:19 PM EST

I'll start the next auctions on Monday.

AdminJonathan January 18 2007 10:21 PM EST

Whoops, I was thinking today was Friday for some reason. I'll start the next ones Saturday instead.
