Some questions about Protection (in General)

velvetpickle December 7 2006 12:30 AM EST

HPIt seems Protection has been calculated to the best of our ablities as reducing roughly 1% of damage per point of protection (after armor reductions etc.)

So I started crunching some numers.

For the purposes of this discussion lets not factor in DM to the discussion as DM obviously makes the entire thread a moot point.

Also I am using pretty rough numbers for my calculations as there are no 100% exact numbers I could find for Protections exceeding 20.

My tank has (20) protection trained The unlearn is 595,695 exp meaning I have trained roughly 627k exp into Protection.

I got numbers from a character with (25) protection and his unlearn was roughly 1,329,174 meaning roughly 1.4mil trained.

It would cost me somewhere around 775k exp to add 5 points of protection netting somewhere around 5% damage reduction, OR 55k extra HP to one minion. I currently have 1 mil trained HP on my tank and 300k on my wall, and an AS that casts 625k for 4 minions.

Now just taking into account the 1mil hp on my tank (since he would be sacrificing HP to train Protection) That should allow him to live throught the equivalent of roughly 50k additional damage dealt. This almost offsets the HP he would have gained. Add in the 2.5mil plus HP the rest of the team gets from a full AS, and it seems that training protection would be the logical choice. Take into account that the majority of battles lost at this level leave the looser with 100's or k neagative HP, and the loss of 50k trained HP seems less drastic.

Aside from the OBVIOUS drawback of DM. It seems I am missing something here, so flame away.

Those are exact. I did them myself, and verified each twice.

He's making a list... Checking it twice... Hopefully NightStrike is feeling real nice, When Christmas time is coming to town...

You'll see a drawback once you realize that you can't go past Protection 33. Sut pumped it to well over level 5m, and it didn't budge.

AdminNightStrike December 7 2006 12:59 AM EST

I think I'll update the wiki with that table, since I already did the work to figure out the XP at each level.

velvetpickle December 7 2006 1:05 AM EST

So it is 755k to go from 20 - 25 (plus armor penalties).

I was really just looking at the best use of that 755k exp, not looking at going much above 25 or 30 protection realistically.

AdminNightStrike December 7 2006 2:34 AM EST

What would be really awesome is if you could figure out if the effect is really indeed an exact percentage reduction of damage. It'd probably be good to test with something that deals fixed damage, like perhaps a RoBF.

velvetpickle December 7 2006 4:26 PM EST

Id be happy to do some Protection testing vs. Robf. If someone has a MgS I could borrow for a few hours (dosen't matter what size) I will do some tests to see how the percentages look with Prot (20)

Shooto December 7 2006 4:56 PM EST

One question I have about this. Since DM negates protection, having a 1mil protection is still beneficial against those with moderate DMs. Instead of losing all the protection you'd only lose up to what they cast for. Not saying its the best use of exp, but you can't forget about that part.

AdminShade December 7 2006 5:07 PM EST

Then what is your question? (or did I miss a question mark of you?)

Shooto December 7 2006 5:12 PM EST

Sorry. Basically I was looking for confirmation on what I wrote. Here you go: ????? Theres a couple for you, didn't mean to make you unhappy.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] December 7 2006 5:14 PM EST

shooto, I think might have been asking vp...just a thought...

AdminShade December 7 2006 5:43 PM EST

If you want confirmation, then having a 1 mil experience Protection just to be able to 'outlast' the semi big Dispel Magic is quite a waste of experience imo.

You could better invest that 1 mil experience into HP which can't be negated by spells.
