Doom Lit Sky's Fix to the Camping problem. (in General)

Doom Lit Sky March 29 2006 8:12 PM EST

I just wanted overall feedback on this, and ideas thoughts, so I decided to make a new thread. No flame or off-topic please, I want feed back on this idea, not childish replies that do nothing for the sake of the conversation.

Maybe not show rares in the store? I wasn't around for "camping" but here is an idea.

Player enters store.
Player leaves store.

No botcheck...

On the top of the page, (near where it shows your cash, there is a link that says: Buy rares. (doesn't even have to be a link in the store, although I think this is the best place for it)

It doesn't show rares on the screen, and it costs 1 ba and a botcheck to "buy rares".

So if a rare "spawns" it spawns into an area that cannot be viewed, and spending your Ba on that "buy rare" or w/e you want to call it, gives you like an declining chance to get all rares spawned. (either all armor, or all weapons, depending on which room you are "camping")

Say 4 rares spawn at once (I dunno if this happened or not, but I see it happen in auctions so bare with me) For the sake of this, lets say 4 ARMOR rares spawned...

Player 1 spends 1 Ba to check for rares. There are 4. He has 100% chance at getting one (Randomly picked between the 4) 75% chance to get 2 rares. 50% chance to get 3 of the rares. 25% chance to get all 4 of the spawned rares.

Not saying he couldn't come back and spend an additional BA, but this way there would still be a competition value to getting the rares...

Ideas?
Thoughts?

We could make it not even cost BA, make it cost 2k every time... I don't see any way this could be exploited to give one person more of an advantage then another person... (also the % where just off the top of my head so don't flame the actual numbers, if Jon likes the IDEA, we all know he will do his own numbers, and we won't know about em. :)

DLS that is a wicked cool idea, and with some slight variation could be exceedingly effective

Rizz March 29 2006 8:31 PM EST

i don't quite get it.. but methinks it would throw the economy for a loop..

Bariagan [Demonic Serenity] March 29 2006 8:41 PM EST

I prefer the auction system over any form of camping. People do not feel compelled to constantly check for rares and I think it actually enables more players to buy them.

Camping merely enables players with money and time to end up with a majority of the rares and resell/rent them. Every rare you find will be bought because of the price differential. The excess can then be auctioned off. You will have replaced the auctioneer (a money sink) with other players which will lead to inflation and greater wealth.

With the auction system, however, there is a point where it is no longer worthwhile to bid on an item for each player. This can be somewhat frustrating for new players in the beginning stages but I think in the long run they actually end up with better chances.

"camping" happened because people would keep visitng the store for rares without penalties. so jon made bot checks and BA penalties to keep the store visits to a minimum....this didnt stop the campers, they still spent all availible BA trying to get the rares. so im guessing thats why he did the whole rare sin auctions, to keep people from snaking all the rares.

your idea will bring back camping again cause people will be able to visit rares all day (using up BA) and snake up the rares. unless i missed something crucial in your post, i doubt we'll see it.

you want competition values over rares? thats what the bidding is for in auctions....if you can't afford it, chances are you wont need it. if you can afford it, happy bidding; good luck.

Camping also helped to give new players a boost, long before the NUB came out. If I hadn't caught my first rares in the store, I probably would have tired of the game pretty quickly. When you've camped an item, you have to interact with other players if you want to sell it, and that's how I got to get to know the interesting people in this game.

So... umm... camping's great! I wish it were still here! But I'm not too sure how different this would be from how it was before.

Rares used to spawn in the store, and you had to be lucky (or skilled) enough to click on them before someone else. If you tried to click two rares, it reduced your chance of getting any at all.

I think this proposal could be just as easily exploited as the old one, but it's nice to see someone is thinking of ways to bring back camping :)

Doom Lit Sky March 29 2006 8:58 PM EST

It is my understanding (Don't shoot me if I'm wrong) that the reason camping was taken away in the first place, was because people where using the google toolbar to speed up their chances of getting a rare. (If there was a rare in the store, the toolbar would find it alot faster then someone "legit")

This new way of camping, disables the visual aspect, making it 100% human.

If people want to spend their Ba waiting in the store all day, who are you to say that is wrong, that's like saying people who forge all day are bad for the community.

From everything I've read, I'm saddened camping is no more, and as a newer player, it is something I would like to see. It brings a whole new element to the game (Or back to the game)

I really miss camping... though I was always saddened by the fact that people (more skilled than I) were always camping to make a USD profit only. Now, I'm not against USD buying and selling, but a few people were paying bills (might as well have) by camping. I would like to see some sort of camping back in the game, but still make it something that every player can ne able to participate in. Unfortunately, auctions do give everyone a fairer chance. Who knows, your idea sounds pretty good - it would need some modifying, but I'm sure someone can help work out the possible kinks

A Bathing Ape March 29 2006 10:24 PM EST

why not make a spawned rare (on an uber rare occasion) have a buy now of its nw?

everyone has a chance and no one can find a loophole to trick the system.

A Bathing Ape March 29 2006 10:25 PM EST

in auctions that is.

Shark March 29 2006 11:41 PM EST

Camping was the best part of CB ever and if you never had the chance you missed out...Dont see it returning in any way shape or form

ScY April 4 2006 11:47 AM EDT

this is a great idea doom lit sky, i think that it should be inplemented with just a few tweaks...maybe an admin, or even jon could take a look at this and make a decision

AdminShade April 4 2006 11:51 AM EDT

DLS it doesn't make any change in the way some people were camping.

They didn't only use the google toolbar, or the FireFox search function which flag the words you search for, but some even wrote / used a script who would automatically buy any rares.

So player comes in and gets bot check, which is filled in and checked.

Script kicks in and selects and buys the item.

Player fills in second bot check and your idea is flawed.

note: I'm not talking down upon your idea, I'm just pointing out errors in it. Perhaps you can think of something better :)

QBJohn Birk [Black Cheetah Bazaar] April 4 2006 12:08 PM EDT

OK how about this insert a random character into the displayed name of the rare item. If you wont buy Helm of4 Durin, I will :)

bartjan April 4 2006 12:20 PM EDT

That would also require images for normal items (or else the rares *really* would stand out). Doing that would require the server to create a lot more "botchecks" than for example fighting.

The main reason why store visits used to cost BA is to slow down the load of the server back then, as it was struggling to create all those botchecks. So, any suggestion for getting camping back that involves the use of more than usual botchecks should be accompanied with the funds sufficient for a quad dual core Opteron server ;)

QBJohn Birk [Black Cheetah Bazaar] April 4 2006 12:26 PM EDT

OK turn the entire display of the store into one big image. Make the image an image map to buy what you want. Just like scripts cannot distinguish the pixels in the bot check, they could not distinguish the pixels in the store. If they could bust that fix, they could bust the bot checks as well.

Maelstrom April 4 2006 1:02 PM EDT

Jibfest once mentioned to me that, if using highlighting tools to find rares in the store is a problem, then the solution would be to have all rares in the store be highlighted by default, therefore giving everyone an equal chance to find them.

Of course, it was people using scripts that caused the problem...
