The Hacker's Diet challenge (in Off-topic)

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 5 2006 12:59 PM EST

Tezmac wondered if I'd like to be a sort of workout partner for exercise and/or dieting using the Hacker's Diet mentioned in the new year's resolution thread.

I think that's a great idea as, like Tezmac said, I find it much easier to stick with new habits when I have a buddy. So sure, let's do it. We can use this pr thread in the short term, then figure out a better place to host the info later.

Tezmac January 5 2006 1:06 PM EST

Excellent! When should we start keeping "official" track? :O)

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] January 5 2006 1:15 PM EST

still checking out the site...that stuff is great!

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 5 2006 4:28 PM EST

No time like the present. I'll start today :-)
Still not sure I'm ready for the dieting part of things but I'll certainly track my weight and exercise.

Tezmac January 5 2006 4:30 PM EST

I think that's all I'd like to "officially" track anyway, so that works for me :O)

vendo January 5 2006 5:40 PM EST

Would you mind having another "buddy"? I'd like to do this also.

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 5 2006 6:56 PM EST

Welcome aboard vendo :-) I welcome anyone who wants to give it a shot and assume Tezmac does as well.

I'm not sure how far we should go in this forum in terms of actually giving numbers. First of all, some of us may feel embarrassed to list our actual weight or exercise level. Second of all, this should not turn into a contest. The important thing here is that each of us sticks with it and makes progress at our own pace. I don't want anybody feeling bad because someone else is moving faster.

So feel free to post whatever you think is most appropriate for you.
- the fact that you did your exercise today
- how much +/- your trend is from your starting point
- your actual weight or exercise level.

Whatever is best for you. (I'm still thinking about what's best for me :-) )

All I ask is that you take this seriously and commit so some amount of time. I've read that it takes 30 days to build a habit. Why not commit to at least weighing yourself and performing some basic exercise for 30 days?

On a related note. I plan to follow the Hacker's Diet exercise ladder and use his excel templates for my weight. I can't resist the pretty graphs. (Woo hoo graphs!)

I assume Tezmac plans to do the same but really, I bet any sane diet or exercise program is better than however most of us live right now so, pick one and go for it :-)

Tezmac January 5 2006 7:08 PM EST

I'm comfortable with posting my weight and exercise level, I'll even post my graph and trend in my user portrait :O)

I second the not making this a contest statement. It's easy to drop a lot of weight fast, this is about building a habit and sticking with it. I wanted to do this so it would keep me honest, if I don't post numbers for several days, I expect to get some grief from the community. :O)

AdminG Beee January 5 2006 7:25 PM EST

OK, I'm in although I'm not overweight. Seemingly I'm just undertall and should in fact be 9'10".

Look out for my user portrait being updated as well - seems like a good place to keep it.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] January 5 2006 7:27 PM EST

@ G Beee: Glad you could join us! When do you plan to start?

@ [BigDaddy]'Tow: You can download and print the pdf document. I'd try to do it at work, but of course I'm not employed at the moment :-(. I printed off the important parts of the exercise chapter and plan to print out a log page tonight.

Guardian of the Glen January 8 2006 1:21 AM EST

Do you have room for one more?

I printed the "BOOK" today at work. It is 336 pages. the printer is still alive (let them pay for the ink) I'll need a 3 inch binder to keep it in. :)

Have read only a little as time now allowing but i really like what i did read.

QBJohnnywas January 8 2006 6:22 AM EST

Sukotto, and anybody else in this thread, apologies for my comment. You're right it was inappropriate. I've just spent most of the past year helping my wife diet for our wedding. I should know better and should have kept it to CM.

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 8 2006 9:27 AM EST

Anyone that wants to participate is more than welcome to do so. Just post what you plan to do. Then post each day so we all know you're sticking with it. Most of us are following the Hacker's Diet but there are a lot of other reasonable plans out there.
Welcome aboard Guardian of the Glen. When do you plan to start? :-)

It's come up via CM so I thought I'd mention it here as well.... please, if you've had to go through back/neck/hip/whatever surgery, or if you weigh significantly more than about 225 pounds, please talk to your doctor before starting an exercise or diet program. You could easily make things worse for yourself aggravating old injuries or blowing out your knees.

On a different note. My favorite blog had a post a while back saying that some cheapo digital scales might just repeat the previous weight if it's not more than +/- 2 lb. I'm not sure if my $30 model from Target does this, but I've been deliberately underweighing myself (like just my leg) once before taking my actual weight.... just in case.

AdminShade January 8 2006 1:25 PM EST

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 8 2006 3:26 PM EST

The chapter "What, Me Exercise?" details an exercise program. Rung #1is the starting point. Rung #2 is slightly more challenging, and so on. According to the book, most people can achieve rung 25 with daily 15 minute workouts. For the really hard core, you can take it as high as rung 48.

Indeed the exercise part is the sucky bit but no pain no gain :)
I play golf twice a week (3.5mile walk each time) and walk the dog every evening for between 15 - 30mins with a lot more on weekends. May not be considered "exercise" in the traditional sense but it beats sitting about all day. This additional exercise as per the diet plan although basic will help the "toning" I'm sure.

My problem is that I don't do any cardiovascular stuff although I can confirm the mere thought of jogging does increase my heart rate.

I just thought of something cool. It would be awesome to combine everyones trend graphs, kinda like the mpr graphs. What you think?

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 12 2006 12:03 AM EST

Although I would find it interesting I don't think we should do it. A graph like that would likely lead to a sense of competition which is definitely something we want to avoid here.

I'm slow with the exercise due to my busted leg and screwed up back but I'm getting there. I'm not looking on the exercise as a must do target (with respect to advancing up the rungs every 5 - 7 days) other than that I must do what I can every day.

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 16 2006 1:01 PM EST

You could stay at rung 1 forever or keep your current weight and it won't matter. (Except to you depending on what goals you've set). All that really matters is putting in the time every day. (And posting so everyone knows you're sticking with it).

Keep it up G Beee, you're doing great :-)

Tyra January 19 2006 9:50 AM EST

what is that all about ??
maybe i should join in

Sukotto [lookingglas] January 19 2006 11:19 AM EST

You're welcome to join us if you like.

Basically, we're dieting and/or exercising daily. Daily posting to show we did it helps us stick to it and not miss days. No competition (except with yourself).

Don't post your real weight if you feel uncomfortable doing so. You can post just the plus/minus from your starting weight if you want. Whatever. We're not here to judge you. Just give you a little moral support to help you stick to it.

I'm doing the daily exercise, but not following the diet. Exercise, every day, no excuses. Even if I have to do it at 2 in the morning because my whole day was shot ... which has happened more than once so far :-(

Want to make a commitment for say... 30 days? You can do some low-impact, easy exercise daily for a mere 30 days can't you?

maulaxe January 19 2006 12:11 PM EST

I read a little bit of the website, but didn't think that I saw anything relating to this... does he recommend anything different for those who are "underweight" according to the conventional weight/height charts?
