Bookmark image of CB? (in Off-topic)

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] December 18 2005 11:19 PM EST

I will admit, I don't know much about the bookmark images that sites have. You know what I mean, the one that is beside the name of the site that shows up automatically. Most sites have them, but I don't think CB does.

Well, it didn't used to. But now, for some reason beyond me, both CB2 and CB bookmark links now have the yahoo Y! as their images (I use FF 1.5). Not really sure why this happened.

Two requests:
*Can we have a CB and CB2 logo that loads by chance? I think it would be a nice little addition.
*Can someone give a brief explanation of how to change my CB image from Yahoo's? It didn't even get fixed when I installed FF 1.5

Maelstrom December 18 2005 11:23 PM EST

I know what you mean about the image, and I have a similar "problem" - in Firefox, my bookmark to CB somehow acquired the image used for the CBC news bookmark.

QBPixel Sage December 18 2005 11:25 PM EST

I think what you're referring to is called favicons. The little 16x16 icon.

No clue why you're getting the Y! icon, but it can be easily changed if a CB2 icon was made and uploaded to the correct directory. If Jonathan doesn't feel like making it, I'd be glad to make one.

Also, we have to be careful with favicons. Once we use one, it'll be very hard to change it. This is because it is cached in a person's browser, and if its cached, most browsers won't check for a new one each time it visits a page. So if its changed, those who visit the site regularly won't be able to see the new icon, since their browser won't detect it.

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] December 18 2005 11:26 PM EST

Hmm, interesting that I'm not the only one then. Could it have something to do with CB itself then? Because I have to say, this is the only site I have bookmarked out of dozens of sites that uses the wrong image.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] December 19 2005 7:48 AM EST

I've been having issues like this for a long time, I think it's a FF issue.

Primordial December 19 2005 6:44 PM EST

Some registering sites don't allow favicons. I bought 3 domains yesterday and I can't use favicons as the site I bought the domains don't accept favicons don't know why. FF has a problem with them I have a MSN favicon under Job Bank lol

AdminShade December 20 2005 2:08 AM EST

It's not a FF issue I think because I used to have the problem with IE...

However it is a very nice idea. :)

QBPixel Sage December 20 2005 2:15 AM EST

So anyone care for a CB2 favicon? Jonathan?

AdminShade December 20 2005 2:52 AM EST

If you make it then make it like this:

bartjan December 20 2005 3:02 AM EST

16 by 16 pixels, Shade ;)

AdminShade December 20 2005 3:03 AM EST

I only gave him an idea to make it, not say that it should be that size... :x

Just my opinion of how the thing should look like, would be more people's opinions I think also though, since this IS the CB icon ;)

Maelstrom December 20 2005 7:48 AM EST

What is that image?

AdminJonathan December 20 2005 10:05 AM EST

go ahead and make one if you like

I reserve the right to not use it if it sucks :)

Maelstrom December 20 2005 10:10 AM EST

All done:

bartjan December 20 2005 10:11 AM EST

* Can you recognize it as a CB logo?
* Is it in the .ico file format?

Maelstrom December 20 2005 10:29 AM EST

It was a joke. Simply the same image, resized to 16x16.

QBPixel Sage December 20 2005 4:27 PM EST

I'll think of what I can do. Making 16x16 images that look good isn't always easy, and as I explained before, there's pretty much one shot at getting it right/good. If we upload a bad favicon, it'll be there for good (for the most part)

AdminShade December 20 2005 4:30 PM EST

Well you can make multiple 16x16 images and let people pick their favorite ;)

QBPixel Sage December 20 2005 4:50 PM EST

Well, just mocked up a quick one. This is simple and I think it works.

QBPixel Sage December 20 2005 11:01 PM EST

So anyways, if you guys like this, I'll provide Jon with the .ico format.

Maelstrom December 21 2005 1:13 AM EST

Those are pretty good, if a bit simple. I prefer the left one. I suggest using a different colour for the text... maybe grey? And maybe a "neater"-looking font; nothing too irritating, but maybe something medieval-ish?

AdminJonathan December 21 2005 10:07 AM EST

I wouldn't mind dropping the 2 if we could then make the rest larger.

AdminShade December 21 2005 10:12 AM EST

CB remains CB indeed.

QBPixel Sage December 21 2005 2:45 PM EST

Sounds good, I'll drop the 2 when I get back home, then upload the result. Does anyone else have a preference on whether we should use the rounded or sharp cornered ones?

QBJohnnywas December 21 2005 2:52 PM EST

On higher resolution settings on the new work comp and my wife's Mac G4 the sharp corners look better, but having said that, on my old piece of junk ancient windows 98 comp in the back room the soft edges....

The soft edges look better to me in FF...

QBPixel Sage December 21 2005 3:11 PM EST

I have similar thoughts to Johnnywas. I'm on an eMac with a CRT monitor, and the round edges look a little better. On my own iMac G4, the sharp corners look better.

QBPixel Sage December 21 2005 7:58 PM EST

Pick either right or left or another suggestion. After I get a consensus on either left or right, I'll post round vs sharp corners.

AdminJonathan December 21 2005 10:18 PM EST

I prefer the left. Looks good!

QBOddBird December 21 2005 10:20 PM EST

My vote is for left, rounded edges. Hurrah!

Special J December 21 2005 10:20 PM EST

left

QBPixel Sage December 21 2005 10:22 PM EST

The final showdown, Sharp vs. Round!

Gilgamesh2090 [NCB Shop] December 22 2005 9:03 PM EST

round edges

AdminJonathan December 23 2005 1:10 AM EST

let's go with sharp.

AdminShade December 23 2005 1:48 AM EST

sharp imo also, looks more 'filled' ;)

AdminG Beee December 23 2005 4:09 AM EST

All of the favicons on my bookmark toolbar are sharp so at least for the sites I use it appears to be the "standard".

I don't think this is a popularity contest tho as Jon has already decreed "let's go with sharp."

I like the rounded one though :p

Stephen January 2 2006 8:18 PM EST

Did the favicon ever get put in the right place on the server?

QBPixel Sage January 2 2006 9:24 PM EST

Oops, no. Forgot to send Jonathan the ico format =D

AdminJonathan January 2 2006 10:58 PM EST

hmm

I've configured it with the right mimetype (sorry for the restarts, guys) but it's not working.

[T]Vestax January 2 2006 11:33 PM EST

Looks great. Good job everyone.

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] January 3 2006 12:40 AM EST

It's a nice and yet simple improvement. Thank you everyone for contributing here, and thank you very much, especially Pixelsage for your fine favicon image and thank you very much Jon as well for putting it up. Looks great!

QBPixel Sage January 3 2006 12:42 AM EST

Whee :)

SNK3R January 3 2006 1:19 PM EST

Looks great. Good job, guys.

Maelstrom January 3 2006 2:23 PM EST

It's not showing up for me. I've tried re-bookmarking CB...

Maelstrom January 4 2006 1:12 AM EST

Ah, after a reboot it has shown up. Very nice :)
