Central bank bidding (in General)

Jonathan bids as the central bank just to drive up bidding prices for characters that do not have minions. Just check out the Cloak of the Istari [6] on the Auctions pages.

This is injustice! How can the creator of the game BID on an ITEM? Ban him! Burn him!
No wait, after thinking about it, it's best to just let him do his thing yeh?

cute... but i think that there is only one problem with his bid... if he wins it, what happens to it? 600K sounds like a reasonable price for a CoI, as it usually goes for more, but does he get to keep it if he wins? mabey, mabey not... i dont think its wrong of him to jump the cost like that, but isnt it up to the players to bid on items?... ive noticed that some lucky players have gotten away with some nice stuff for dirt cheap lately, so i understand trying to maintain the base value of the item, but somethings not right here...

In the past, items won by Central Bank were destroyed.
Apparently the current market price for CoI is too low. This is just a method to increase that price.
to drive up the prices you'd think he would lessen the availiability of the item rather than bid on it...

Destroying the items does exactly that...
oh yeah...wow, i shoulda slept last night :)

It kind of takes the fun out of bidding.

Check out A Helm of Ecthelion [6]. He just increased it 15000. Why? Did he not like who might win?

He does not like the price.

Why doesn't he just start them at a higher price? does he not know how to program?
I'm sure he has his reasons david. If he set the minimum bids higher on items, it would artificially inflate the market and perhaps drive people to FS/WTB- which he doesn't really want since it's not as scam proof and good as the auction system. Or at least that's my take on it. And by bidding on items himself, he is not trying to rip you off, and is only trying to avoid having a surplus and price drops. His game, so he knows best. Besides, no one complained when we had shortages and he put all those items into Auctions.
On another note david: yes, he does know how to program. From what little I know of his work here on CB, I'm very impressed. And I'm not sure if you were trying to be insulting to him there, but it kind of sounded that way to me and I'd have to kind of say you should probably back off and be more careful of what you say. Asking if the programmer of a game knows how to program sounds a lot like the question 'are you stupid?' to me. Show a little respect to the guy that made all this around here possible.

Vaynard, if you start it off higher you know how much you need to start bidding, the fun is in the bidding, jumping it 600000 in one shot is just annoying.
And yes, I was being as insulting as you were patronizing.

david: he is able to increase minimum bids, but that defeats the entire auctioning program, he NOW wants to get the price higher so makes them higher by bidding on them.
so LATER on the item will be more rare and thus people will pay more money for them.

Perhaps he's testing a new auto-bidding feature? ;)
Maybe people didn't want to bid until it was near the end. I know I usually wait until the auction is almost over before I bid (usually).

Its not an auction if you are artificially manipulating the prices on your own auctions, This is what he is doing.

Did you think you'd start a massive anti-jon Cb riot?
NO ONE CARES.
We all LIKE and HAVE FAITH in our admins unlike most online games. Cry me a river.

Anyone that has been here for any amount of time knows that Jon takes the economy here VERY serious. He would not be messing around with prices/availability without a VERY good reason.
Sit back, relax, and let Jon run his game.
