Jon shared some server logs with me so I could run some stats on browser usage (as mentioned in the Sidebar thread)
Please be aware that some browsers lie about themselves so these numbers may not be 100% accurate. The data is from the five day period from October 22 through October 26. To generate these numbers, I looked only at requests to the CB homepage (sign-in page)
1 Browsers
Rank | Page loads | Percent | Browser |
1 | 75,415 | 63.01387% | Internet Explorer |
2 | 40,306 | 33.67814% | Firefox |
3 | 2,437 | 2.03626% | Netscape |
4 | 486 | 0.40608% | Opera |
5 | 348 | 0.29078% | Camino |
6 | 232 | 0.19385% | Safari |
7 | 149 | 0.12450% | Galeon |
8 | 114 | 0.09525% | SearchEngineSpider |
9 | 92 | 0.07687% | Mozilla |
10 | 36 | 0.03008% | Netscape compatible |
11 | 29 | 0.02423% | Konqueror |
12 | 19 | 0.01588% | Email Harvester (Spammer) |

17 | 1 | 0.00084% | DownloadClient |
total | 119,680 | 100.00000% | |
- SearchEngineSpider includes adsense and pagerank spiders
- "Netscape compatible" are browsers that identify as being Netscape compatible but cannot be positively identified (unlike, say Internet Explorer, which is a Netscape compatible, but has keywords that identify it as IE)
- "Java" appears to be Jon doing something clever :-)

I am interested in who is using windows ce, and the success of such.

If you auto login, does it still hit the login page?

Good question, Undertow!
Those stats are quite interesting... I wonder if the 1,019 users of "Unknown Windows" versions are using versions before Win95? Those would be the true brave souls!
Where do the Treos (and other cell phones, etc) show up? Do they use Windows?

168 known robots?
what are those robots then?

It's the Windows ME users that I feel truly sorry for.
What a bag of dung that version of windows is.
I don't know if you still hit "carnageblender.com/" if you auto-login. for the purposes of the report, I assumed that we only cared about browsers hitting that single page.
I could have written up the site wide stats but then the numbers would be skewed toward the people who come here the most. There are also a couple of strange urls in there that do not appear to be game related which would skew things even more.
To be really thorough, I suppose I could grep for every possible user_id (as of right now, there are only 108,169) and output to a new "log file" which I could then process. that would give me the browsers used but those people, but then we wouldn't see the bots, spammers, rss aggregators, and whatnot. (and I find those non-players quite interesting as well)
So no matter what I do, the numbers aren't going to be perfect. *shrug*

Another problem with going by user ID would be the fact that many users use multiple computers, with different OS's and browsers.
Yes, and some of them might not have logged in during the 5 days of data I have available.
in any case the data has some interesting things to tell us....
1. As much as those of us who have returned to hating IE don't want to admit it, people still use it.
2. I'm the only person using Camino.
3. Someone hasn't update a copy of Fire fox so old it's sill called Firebird...

and Camino is what, the download client or the sunOS?

How many labelled as 'Netscape' are version 1.3? and how many are version 8.x?
I'm probably the only 1 that uses Galeon.
Firebird? Well, at least there was no Phoenix user...
Of the 2437 people using Netscape
2135 Netscape/7
110 Netscape/8
97 Netscape/6
95 Netscape/4

If you're using Galeon you may want to check out Epiphany, as Galeon is slated to become extensions to the latter
As an interesting comparison against world-wide stats. ZDNet reported today that Firefox has 11% of the global market share for browsers.
Compare to the 34% used when accessing this site.

that's because CB people are in the know :P
Or because there's a pretty strong anti-IE bias when people talk to each other here which may convince some IE users to make the switch to Fx.
