This SMTOE owner needs YOU! (in Contests)

InebriatedArsonist May 11 2005 1:17 AM EDT

Alright, everyone, I'm bored and I want your opinions. The following contest is open to anyone, not just SMTOE owners.

What I'm Thinking:

-With the recent changes to mage armor, specifically Elven Gloves and the Cornuthaum, a single mage wearing a ToE has very little to spend money on. With only four armor slots remaining, and none of those slots able to impart a bonus to DD spells, I have to wonder if buying expensive rare armor is worth the handful of extra AC.

What You Have to Do:

-Below are three prompts. There will be three prizes of 25k given out (as long as there are enough entries), one for each of the prompts. Best answer, as judged by myself and a co-conspirator, will receive the prize. I'm looking for clear, complete and concise answers. There's no real length requirement, but there's no way I'm giving away 25k for a one-liner.

1. "IA, you need to buy the rare stuff. You'll appreciate the extra AC." Convince me this is the proper mindset.

2. "IA, just blow your cash on a pair of Displacement Boots. They're the new black." Show me your fashion sense and convince me to shell out for that shiny new pair from Raffaello.

3. "IA, don't bother with those other ideas, what you really need to do is..." I'm looking for creativity here, so feel free to think of some other interesting use for my cash rewards. No, I'm not donating it to you.

This contest will run until I get bored with it, or people lose interest, whichever comes first.

IA, don't bother with those other ideas, what you really need to do is...

Send me all the cash you have.

Creative, aren't I?

sssimmo May 11 2005 1:21 AM EDT

3. Get a paypal account and sell the cash for US$. That way cb gives even more back to you. A few extra drinks at the bar each week!

sssimmo May 11 2005 1:23 AM EDT

actually...you should buy as much ac as you can until the cost becomes too ridiculous then start my idea for "3"

sssimmo May 11 2005 1:27 AM EDT

IA if u count my 2 posts its 2 lines ha!
give me a bit of time to think, come up with something juicy!

Mags May 11 2005 1:28 AM EDT

Use the initial capital to hire an army of mid-to-low range clan members for a hefty stipend every day. Perform the CB2 equivalent of DDoS(distributed denial-of-service) attacks by threatening individual clans with army-farming to the point of extinction if they don't pay insurance money and/or trouble the Grammarians. Recycle insurance money into army. Skim off the top to recoup your investment and earn enough for a private Atlantic island.

Sevare May 11 2005 1:29 AM EDT

1: SMTOE can still use a corn if you use say...dispell magic or amf, in fact it can lower the exp needed to obtain the level you want leaveing more for your DD+HP

2:Displacment boots are fun...kill the NW of that tanks shiny weapon..just watch out for his fancy footwork.

3:Dont Panic

sssimmo May 11 2005 1:29 AM EDT

yeah what he said

maulaxe May 11 2005 1:34 AM EDT

1.and 2.
IA, because you are a SMTOE, that means that you will soon be switching to tank. As such, you need to start some investments now, so that when not if, you switch you will already have some sweet gear.
and plus, you can always start renting your uber-NW-laden gear for some cash on the side, seeing as how you don't absolutely need it.

3. don't bother with all the rest of the ideas in this thread. send that money to me! *

* I wish.

AdminShade May 11 2005 5:26 AM EDT

what do you need YOU for? he's a forger :P

5583 days old {Gaza} May 11 2005 6:34 AM EDT

You need the rare armor, but not for the AC, you need it for the Magic enhancers, and since no boots enhance magic (as I remember) DB's are just as useful. Alternatively, go naked and kill all

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] May 11 2005 8:08 AM EDT

"IA, don't bother with those other ideas, what you really need to do is..."

Take you money, but as many rares as you can from people panic selling. Stick those into rentals to accrue more wealth. Use that to buy more rares and contiue the cycle.

Every Odd month, complain about something until that item is changed, use the panic selling to get more rares.

Aquire more capitla than Jon or the CB Eco clans.

Grow into such wealth that you can stick a load of items on a character, retire it to make those items vansih into the void, and push up prices on the others you hoard.

Muwhahahaha

"IA, don't bother with those other ideas, what you really need to do is..."
Change your strategy to a Single Tank using a Tattoo of Augmentation. Get all the tank AC gear thats possible (CML, TG or BG, BoM, and possibly HoD or HoE). Get a Morgul-Hammer for its life sucking. And get a Elven Long Bow.
Train HP and Archery and a small VA if you wish to assist the MH. Also, put on a Anti-Magic Field for the tank. Dispel Magic works too, but I think AMF is better for STToA.
This way you can spend your cash on your armor and your weapons. It'll take a long long while before anyone hits x100 +100, so why not be one of the first? =D
Also with a ToA you won't have to train much or anything at all into ST or DX, and your DX won't take a hit since you won't have any trained (except for the base 20).

sssimmo May 11 2005 11:57 PM EDT

he will need to train exp into st and dx if he is going to buy armour with st and dx bonuses.

LumpBot May 12 2005 12:05 AM EDT

Tresdot pretty much laid out my strategy word for word except I have a seperate minion for the AMF and VA =P also he didn't realize that you can't have a BoM on a ToA tank. It's now a power shield so MS it is!

Contest Update

Current acceptable entries:

1. Go buy the AC armor: 0 entries
2. Blow it on Displacement Boots: 0 entries
3. Get creative: Mags, Maulaxe, GentlemanLoser, Tresdots

As I said before, I'm not giving away 25k for one-sentence answers. The entries from Sevare, Gaza and Spaceman need to be expanded upon if their authors want prize eligibility.

As it now stands, two of the three writing prompts have no entries. I take it nobody wants 25k for a few minutes of thought? Remember, this contest is open to anyone.

LumpBot May 12 2005 12:52 AM EDT

Sure, I'll shoot with my 2 cents. What do you do? Don't follow the masses, try and keep on the down low so people don't say "Nerf IA!"

I suggest getting a second minion. Training nothing but HP and some protection. Spend a ton of money on a CoBF and some AC gear. here is why:

If he is in the back, the second susan goes down, he will be the one to either "draw" the match or win it. I assume you are losing to other tanks so let them kill themselves in melee. With the ToE, Protection, and high AC(150K isn't too hard to reach except for finding the adam) he will live long enough to take out the remaining team. So leave your mage NW free. Pump it all into an AC CoBF wall. And pray that Jon doesn't nerf that idea =P

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] May 12 2005 5:38 AM EDT

1. "IA, you need to buy the rare stuff. You'll appreciate the extra AC." Convince me this is the proper mindset.

IA, of course you need to but the rare stuff for your character. AC is becoming more important, and with NW soon to roll into PR you will need to get armour that is the cheapest to upgrade, to keep your PR low and your rewards high!

What you need to decide is whether the flat minus from your DD dmage is worth the long term goal of being able to up your AC. -10% DD damage for a possible 21%+ Damage reduction.

Besides, you need all the armour slots filled so you can name the items and customise your character!

The main thing to consider is the DD minus is a flat amount. The percentage reduction will never change (inless the item stats are changed) while with time and money, the percentage damage reduction the armour gives you will continue to grow and grow.

Rare armour for AC is a long term goal.

2. "IA, just blow your cash on a pair of Displacement Boots. They're the new black." Show me your fashion sense and convince me to shell out for that shiny new pair from Raffaello.

AC? Who needs AC. With no dex, you'll always be hit for 1 and possibly two dex hits per round. But consider the new ToA. +50 pth. Combine that with cheap pth increases on the big weapons and your guaranteed of taking a third hit per round and soon a fouth!!

You NEED a pair of DBs to stop this. Every attack that is stopped in this fashion is a 100% damage reduction. No AC will ever reach that.

Besides, Susan needs some nice high heel shoes to show of her legs! ;) And remaning a pair of DBs will get her just that! If only the fight log could be changed to describe Susan dancing around her opponent instead of just dodging their blows!

Synco May 12 2005 9:24 PM EDT

Well, I don't have one choice out of 1, 2, or 3.

I think you should get some DB's to avoid doubles and triples. You should buy a Corn at leat +6 to increase your enchants. (AMF, DM, Prot, etc.).

If you want to think really long term, after that start saving up and giving loans. Also buy more rares and put them into rentals. They will gain value over time and then you can sell your profits for USD.

Well, I hope that helps.

~Leon =)

Contest Update

Current acceptable entries:

1. Go buy the AC armor: GentlemanLoser
2. Blow it on Displacement Boots: GentlemanLoser
3. Get creative: Mags, Maulaxe, GentlemanLoser, Tresdots, Spaceman

I'll run this another day or so. Plenty of competition in the third category, but just a tad sparse for the other two. Any takers?

Black Dog fails. Don't bother showing up for the final exam, it can't help you.

[-war-] May 14 2005 5:40 AM EDT

Here are my options for you to take a look at for all 3 prompts :)
1: Go Buy a ton of AC to the point where you are invincible, so what the items give -dex/magic. If you are invincible then you can stand there all day and take hits, then when you feel like it just tell your enemies to drop dead. When your minion feels like attacking with its DD it will kill its enemies perhaps it will do less dmg but hey, at least you don't die. (this is a big money drainer though unless you load up on heavy gear but do not put in so much nw that you are broke)200 AC is do-able without a cloak.

2:In any game I have played, in most cases investing in dodging hits never works, there will always be someone that can always hit. DB is a bad choice, put on some heavy armor as I said above.

3: If you feel like going for this option, Talk to the guy that got the real men fight naked pic, he does pretty well, of course has a toj around. If you take this option and are able to kill anyone out there, then you will get the best rewards out there compared to those that have heavy nw and get bad rewards. With this option though you will take the most dmg.

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] May 15 2005 12:44 AM EDT

"IA, don't bother with those other ideas, what you really need to do is..."

Take that wad of cash into New Players and give it away. Make them do things the contestants of "Fear Factor" would be embarrassed by. Ask them tricky game questions and give cash rewards for the right answers. Give more for most shockingly wrong answer. Offer to buy all DCM from them at 2x NW, sell all DCM back to the store, see how many re-buy. Make yourself a demiGod in New Players. This will surely stave off your ennui far better than a silly strat change.

Alternatively, use the money to buy QB votes. Susan can take care of herself! You, however, could do with a cute little pink bold italics "QB" in front of your moniker. Whenever you are bored, you can just sit back and admire your own name. You've got CoBF money now, and that should be enough to purchase a place in CB history.

There, are you happy now? Do I have to pay to enter this contest? What are the rules again?

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] May 15 2005 1:19 AM EDT

1. "IA, you need to buy the rare stuff. You'll appreciate the extra AC."

I have a different take on this however. You need to get a CoI. It is the only way now to increase your DD spell, unless I am mistaken. And the bigger it is, the harder you hit. So, with this as your one and only item, make it worth it. Yes, it gets much more expensive quickly. But so did the CB1 ELB going to say x25. But it will be worth it, and with only this one item to spend all the cash you ever make, you can make it a CoI of insane proportions! Be number one in the CoI listings! Have your CoC shoot up in size! Let this one item give you a better DD bonus than all of your mage gear could have before!

Jason Bourne May 17 2005 12:44 AM EDT

copy ranger...

all the best people are doing it!

hire two more minions, put dm on one and make the other a tank. now put a toa on him and give him a weapon! turn susan into a tank and away you go! u will be in the top 3 in no time :D

dont forget to buy the biggest ELB you can get your hands on...

Contest Results

After some deliberation, the contest is over and results are in!

Judging Method

Every entry was graded by myself, with consideration given towards correct information and original thought. The entries were then ranked and given a set of numbers on a scale of 0-30, with the higher ranked entries given more numbers. The random number generator at this website then spit out five random numbers along the same scale. Lady Luck, my co-conspirator, picked the winners.

Prompt One

GL - 0-18
Vaynard - 19-26
War 27-30

Random Numbers: 4, 23, 14, 22, 18
Winner: GentlemanLoser, 25k sent to Talhearn.

Prompt Two

-One valid entry does not a contest make. You lost, GL, but only to yourself, so don't feel bad. 5k sent for effort.

Prompt Three

Mags 0-10
Maulaxe 11-12
GL 13-17
Tresdots 18-22
Spaceman 23
Bast 24-27
War 28-30

Random Numbers: 24, 9, 5, 11, 14
Winner: Mags, 25k sent to Brock Samson.

Congrats, and thanks for playing!

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] May 17 2005 3:13 AM EDT
